Tucked away in a traditional English village, the parking wasn’t easy for this little hidden nook but it was most certainly worth the struggle… Full to the brim on a winter Sunday afternoon, it was by chance we were able to get a table so booking is recommended! A family pub, anyone and everyone is welcome here with spacious outdoor areas – out front and back! – this would be perfect for a lazy summers evening…

Their menu covers a range of tastes, not forgetting traditional pub classics, lighter lunchtime bites, vegetarian meals and a children’s menu. Most notably, they also highlight the items that are Gluten Free –ideal for coeliac’s. The menu also covers a range of old-fashioned desserts, such as apple + pear crumble, sticky toffee pudding and vanilla rice pudding; as well as fresh sorbet’s and Salcombe dairy ice cream – in a range of flavours including chocolate orange and honeycomb!

A whole baked camembert, confit garlic, chutney & rosemary with warm focaccia bread...

For starters we shared a baked camembert, described by the Bucks Head as “whole baked camembert, confit garlic, chutney & rosemary with warm focaccia bread” yet described by us as truly delectable… The camembert was cooked perfectly, the cheese gooey and perfectly accompanied with the garlic, chutney and bread. Not mentioned on the menu, there was also a dish of creamy butter to spread on the focaccia if desired. The starter was brought out on a black slate; the bread was cut into strips, toasted and stacked neatly. Our main meal was a large, traditionally British, ‘fish and chips’ – and it was nothing I had ever tasted before! The fish was coated in a crispy batter, but was soft and flaky within; this was almost hanging over the edge of the plate, and was laid across the chunky chips which, too, were cooked to be soft, fluffy and faultless. These were served with a large lemon segment, a dollop of mushy peas, and a jar of “homemade tartar sauce.” The tartar sauce, in particular, was a delicious, flavoursome accompaniment to the meal and was neatly presented.

Our server was polite and friendly, immediately tending to our needs as soon as we walked through the door to find us a suitable table, seat us with menus and take our order. Our food was served promptly – considering how busy they were – and our bill taken quickly. To conclude, our meal at the Bucks Head was exquisite, its location was quaint – a mere 10 minute drive from the picturesque deer-spotting Knole Park - and the service attentive and welcoming.
