Following the closure of our short trip to Bruges, Belgium, we thought it may be beneficial to provide a list of the best experiences and attractions to do as a foodie in the historical town!
Choco-Story A museum down a side street of the picturesque town, it tells the story of chocolate throughout history – providing tasters as you go round! The building itself dates back to the 15th Century, however each room covers a different portion of history around the world including information on the use of chocolate by the Mayan’s, Aztecs and Spaniards, as well as the production process from the cocoa bean to the gorgeous Belgian chocolate available to test around the museum. On the ground floor, visitors have the opportunity to watch a demonstration on how the chocolates sold in the gift shop are made, which also covers why they use specific cocoa and – the best part – offers viewers chocolates made in earlier demonstrations! A highly recommended museum in Bruges, you will leave full of knowledge – and delicious Belgian chocolate – and it is worth allowing some time to peruse the intricate sculptures you will find along your tour. It is also worth mentioning that you can obtain a discount on tickets if you buy this alongside other local museum tickets.
Friet Museum A short walk from Choco-Story is the friet museum: a museum of fries. Ultimately, you may receive some strange looks when you tell your friends back home of your visit to a museum of potatoes; however this is more than worth it for just a taste of their crispy, golden fries! When you purchase your tickets, you are given one voucher per person for a discounted cone of fries at the end of your tour – a lovely touch and a good reason to visit. The museum covers the different types of potatoes, people throughout history who have had relevance to creating the fries we know and love today, and the tools used to create such.
Chocolate and Patisserie stores Bruges is full of chocolate and patisserie stores, there’s one on every corner and unfortunately not enough time to try them all… However, the detail and delicacy of some of their cakes is amazing and something you just have to try whilst visiting.
