Mythos Benitses

The restaurant is set in a little market-like area of Benitses, Corfu. There are many other similar restaurants around – as with many beachfront towns – however here we felt comfortable to browse the menu without being approached or pressured, which is a big deciding factor for us when eating abroad. Logic being: if they’re pushy, they’re clearly not strong enough to bring in customers on food and appearance alone. With indoor and outdoor seating, we opted to sit outdoors slightly back from the path to enable us to watch the world go by and eat in our own time. This also allowed us to watch the chef, which was situated in a little nook creating the pizzas from scratch and placing them into a stone oven to bake – a good touch to differentiate the restaurant from others along the strip.

The restaurant offered menus in many different languages, including English, French and German to highlight their suitability to many tourists. The menu focused largely on seafood and pizzas, therefore not offering a huge variety and perhaps not best for those with children, and especially for those with specific requirements (such as coeliac or vegetarian).

We ordered two pizzas between us. The first containing ham, sausage and pepperoni with a BBQ sauce spiral over the top of this. The second: chicken and peppers and a BBQ sauce spiral. The pizzas were larger than usual – perhaps better suited to two between three people – but the toppings were generous and covered it well. The dough was slightly floury, crispy around the crust but with a soft base, though not too soft that the slice was ‘floppy’ when picked up. Both pizzas were cooked well and not overdone, allowing for the cheese to be gooey and each pizza flavoursome.

The service was generally good from start to finish; from not being harassed when perusing the menu in the street, being able to choose our own table, and the server having spoken good English when we ordered. However, both food and drinks – Diet Cokes – were slow to be brought to our table, and this continued until we were ready to pay our bill. Unfortunately, this did put a damper on our meal.

To conclude, whilst none of this was spectacularly out-of-this-world, it was suitable for what we would have expected of the environment and we were content with what we received.
