Set in the main Markt square, this is an ideal spot to sit and people watch the afternoon away. With outdoor seating beneath a canopy, customers are able to enjoy the atmosphere of the square as well as a delicious bite, outside of the sun. This is situated on the end of a strip of restaurants, all serving similar things, but this arguably offers the best views adjacent to the ‘Historium Brugge’ and directly opposite the ‘Belfort van Brugge’ the other side of the square.
The menu offered a range of items, the usual expected in a European town consisting of a variety of salads, sandwiches and, of course, Belgian fries. Undeniably, there would be something for everyone: vegetarians, children and picky eaters alike. A large selection of beverages are also available, so you are bound to find something refreshing after a long walk around the picturesque town.
Choosing a toasted ham + cheese sandwich each, this was cut into four triangles, upright and skewered to hold their position, the bread was gently toasted – browned, straight lines adding to it’s aesthetic – and filled generously with stretchy cheese and thick slices of ham, this was a delicious lunchtime meal. Accompanied with plenty of salad consisting of greens, cucumber, tomato and a house dressing, as well as a small dish of mustard, this had both an authentic European taste and presentation: light, flavoursome and fresh. Between us, we also opted for a dish of Belgian fries ~ or frites to be exact ~ which were also served with a small pot of mustard and cooked to perfection, as always. For drinks: a glass of orange juice and some water for the table. Interestingly, the water was served in a wine glass, adding an air of sophistication to the otherwise nonchalant beverage. Unfortunately, as with many European countries, the orange juice was rather ‘bitty’ and therefore perhaps not to everyone’s taste.

The service at Petit Café was polite and prompt, we were able to sit and watch the world go by for over an hour, even after we had finished our lunch, and this was not a problem. When we arrived we were given the choice of some tables, opting to sit a little further back from the square to allow us some privacy and still allow us some sunshine. Our meal was reasonably priced, and the bill was taken as and when we were ready.
Petit Café was a perfect little spot tucked in the corner of Markt, and has an ideal location to each corner of Bruges; whether you be sightseeing or opting for a leisurely day in the sun, there is a wide range of food and drink offered and it is unlikely anyone would go hungry. The staff are polite and happy to work around your needs. All in all, a good way to spend your afternoon in Bruges…
